smear tactics have no place in these forums |
A person calling himself a researcher has a post, " how the houghton colledge chooses its films(funny)"He refers to " an interesting article" I have read the article which states that teachers can freely select films for showing in their classrooms. Similarly students have the same freedom in the selection of films for showing their clubs and societies. The college uses rating system to select films for public screenings (as such it is not different to those used by tv stations, film critics ,cinemas etc). The opinions of Clem Williams,or his advertising company have no part in the selection process

Re: smear tactics have no place in these forums |
It goes against my better judgment to get dragged into this, but I'll try to bridge the communications gap here and kill the joke by explaining it.
A Visit to Santa is in the archive -
http://www.archive.org/movies/details-db.php?collection=prelinger&collectionid=01859
It is, by most useful standards, not a very good movie. Furthermore, it is distinclty unsophisticated.
Yet, out of all the many ways on how to choose films what films are appropriate for a prmarily college aged audience, Houghton College appealed to a publication called "Sophisticated Films Movie Guide" from the makers of this unsophisticated and poorly put together film.
Even had nobody treated it as an authority, the mere fact that the same orginaztion that came up with this film would also come up with a book with such a title would be humorous. The same laughter would probably occur had the author been Ed Wood.
One of the respondants reacted to the freedom of expression/censorship angle of the policy instead. Deal.

I would suggest to GersonK that I he read my newly added review of A Visit To Santa. I ask him whether or not he is going to revise his damning association of this film to Houghton College?I have read his very lengthy comments on that film . I agree that it is a trashy film, but what has that to do with a fine institution like the college?

It IS pretty damning...for Clem Williams.
The association IS there, let's face it:
A Visit to Santa ~12 reviews all state somehow that it sucks - By Clem Williams Films.
Houghton Univ. - Has listed a reference to a publication by Clem Williams Films.
There's a direct association.

Re: smear tactics have no place in these forums |
It's not really my association to revise. Houghton College has associated themselves with Clem Williams by using his guide. Not much I can do about that.
If I were trying to make an in-depth analyses of either Mr. Williams' ouvre (on-topic here) or Houghton College's film policy (off-topic here), I would want more evident than A Visit to Santa.
But all I'm analyzing (over analyzing, actually) is whether or not my only point of reference* on Mr. Williams "talent" makes him being treated as a film authority funny. And it still is.
*And after various google searches, I found only two hints that he made other films, and nobody who saw the need to comment on the quality thereof.

jack2: "a fine institution like the college"
I am confused about your meaning. What does "fine" mean in the context you have put it? A "fine" judge of film quality? A "fine" institution of academic instruction? A fine what?

Re: smear tactics have no place in these forums |
The only thing remotely close to "smear" has been the complaints about what other members post in reviews and on this forum lately. Now THAT is irony.
